Before you Run
One of the many advantages of running is the low cost of equipment. However, a good pair of running trainers is the most important part of your running kit. They must fit well and suit your personal running style, giving you vital support and shock absorption, which will help you achieve the results you are aiming for whilst reducing the risk of picking up a running injury.
You may have a sports shop near to you that specialises in running footwear. They should be able to measure your feet and analyse your running style to provide advice on the best type of running footwear for your specific body type and running style.
A pair of sports socks will complement your trainers. More expensive brands will also soak away moisture and sweat and keep your feet dry.
As for clothing (also referred to as apparel), at a basic level, all you need to run is a pair of shorts and a t-shirt (for most climates and weather conditions).
Manufacturers have developed technical fabrics that they describe as “breathable” and providing “moisture management”. These ensure better air circulation and will help keep you dry whilst you run. Your gear should be comfortable and lightweight so that it doesn’t inhibit movement.
On windy or cooler days, you might like to have a long-sleeved t-shirt to run in, and it’s also a good idea to have a waterproof top for when it is wet. For when it is really cold you can invest in some gloves and a thicker top or jacket to run in – again you can get products that have been specially designed for runners.
Specialist sports sunglasses are also a good idea on bright days at any time of the year as they will protect your eyes from the sun, the wind and even insects as you run.
